Return To Essence: How To Be In The Flow And Fulfill Your Life’s Purpose

Being in the flow and not being in the flow are two very different states. One is dominated by the ego-driven mind, which is the cause of suffering, while the other is the domain of Essence, the Divine within each of us. We are meant to live in the flow. The flow is the experience of Essence–our true self–as it lives life through us and fulfills its purpose for this life. Return to Essence describes how to get into the flow and stay there and how to live life from there. It also explains what the flow is, how it feels, and what you find there; how the ego/mind and conditioning keep us out of the flow; how to get back into the flow; how action, talking, knowing, and choosing come out of the flow; how to discover where the flow is going; and how to find and fulfill our life purpose. Exercises throughout provide an opportunity for practicing and integrating the understanding.

From Return to Essence: “You cannot be fulfilled by someone else’s life purpose; you can only be fulfilled by yours. You won’t find out what that is by listening to the mind because it doesn’t know. Only by paying attention to what is coming out of the flow and letting that lead you through your life will you fulfill your life’s purpose.”

Review by Jeff Bronson for Return To Essence: How To Be In The Flow And Fulfill Your Life’s Purpose
For fans of Eckhart Tolle and the few other great spiritual teachers of this time, this book shows us how to concretely apply those teachings in our every day lives. We hear “just be” or “stay conscious and aware of the present moment” from these teachers, but how do we apply these teachings to our lives in a practical way? How do we distinguish the voice of the conditioned mind (ego) from what awareness (the Self) is trying to communicate to and through us and how do we translate this into our speech and actions?

While the pure advaitist may have trouble with the notion that we can align ourselves with the Absolute by doing anything (because we are not truly individuals at all but only the Self manifesting as it will), for those of us who choose to act as if we have some power to influence our experience of Life, this book is essential.

Gina Lake comes from the non-dual tradition, but her credentials also include a background in counseling psychology; she is also a gifted astrologer and channel. Her book is not an airy-fairy new age spin on non-dual philosophy and its application. It is an extremely well-written guidebook on the practical application of non-dualism to one’s life so that one’s experience becomes more and more enjoyable and adventurous and in harmony with the divine.

I couldn’t wait to recommend this book! I am not quite at the half way point and yet the message of Return to Essence is so hopeful for those who want to know and live as Truth that I feel compelled to let people know about it right away.

So often we hear that there is nothing to do and no one there to do anything. And yet if we want to wake up, this teaching can be very frustrating. Return to Essence approaches the idea of choice and effort in a completely new and refreshing way. Here is an excerpt:

“You must make this choice to be give your attention to the moment over and over again until being present in the moment becomes automatic and your natural way of being. Making this choice takes an ongoing commitment to waking up and allowing essence to live through you.”

The message is clear, simple, and full of promise. Waking up is no longer for the fortunate few. It is the most natural thing, and Return to Essence is a wonderful guide for those who are tired of seeking and don’t want to postpone freedom any longer. –Laura Prue

Review by Namaste for Return To Essence: How To Be In The Flow And Fulfill Your Life’s Purpose

I believed psychics and mediums when they told me that I was an old soul. I read that old souls tended to congregate in certain areas and that Northern California was one of those areas. Knowing that a spiritual teacher I admired for his clarity also lived there I decided that there’s where I need to move. I believed that moving and interacting with other `old souls’ was a part of my life purpose. But life put up many blocks in that direction. It made it seem impossible to leave when I thought I should. I thought I was following Gina’s advice and listening to my Heart but when Gina suggested that perhaps it was simply the voice of my ego dressed up in spiritual garb that I was listening to, I had a dramatic paradigm shift. Just because what I wanted sounded and seemed right to my mind didn’t mean that it was resonating with my spirit. I asked myself if there were feelings of excitement and elation around the decision and there weren’t any. It just felt like a sense of obligation, some duty I had to fulfill. Of course, it was something I wanted but there was no sense of joy around it as Gina says there would be if I was being guided by the Heart. I realized that perhaps I need to fine-tune my ability to listen to my Heart. One way Gina suggests to do this is to create more space and presence in one’s life to hear the voice of Heart, perhaps in meditation or just by resting in presence through the day. This has helped me tremendously. I also look for clues in my dreams.

I love Gina’s elucidation of the general energy patterns and life purposes of the astrological signs because they resonate with what I’ve come to see to be true. It is reassuring to know that most life purposes are eventually fulfilled but just as important to know that we can help them along by affirming our commitment to be led in the right direction. To listen to the Heart, we must be in the now; open to the spontaneous urgings that it produces without overlaying judgments and fixed ideas about our own possibilities and potential. A life purpose is more than just a line of work – it rests fundamentally in the lessons we have all come here to learn – patience, love, compassion, empathy, and trust. Gina’s book affirmed my commitment to focus on my own lifelong dream of writing a novel. I can feel the egoic motivation behind this goal but I can also sense a deeper guidance towards it. One mark of this is that the journey itself feels like it is worth the effort – even if the ultimate goal is not achieved.

My first introduction to Gina Lake’s work was her free download book “Radiance: Experiencing Divine Presence” on her website ( It was obvious to me from this small sampling that Gina is a gifted teacher who truly embodies her messages. I was ready for more and have not been disappointed.

To quote from the introduction to Return to Essence: “The flow is the experience of who you really are as it moves through life. … But how do you get there and how do you stay there?” This book answers those questions. Gina gives information and examples as well as practical exercises to support the material, especially helpful in showing you how to recognize the difference between ego-generated thoughts and direction coming from Essence (Source, your higher self, true self, god-self, or whatever way you refer to it).

If you’ve read Gina’s earlier works, like ‘Radical Happiness’ or if you haven’t but are beginning to see that there is a wonderful difference between following spirit and following ego and want more help, guidance and information, this book is for you. It has helped me recognize what is driving my decisions and actions, and makes it easier to get back ‘in the flow’ – which is a most rewarding place to be!

Review by Lisa Holliday Lee for Return To Essence: How To Be In The Flow And Fulfill Your Life’s Purpose
Below is my review for Radical Happiness, my first Gina Lake book. All of this holds true for Return to Essence, yet is a TOTALLY new and wonderful experience. I was in the process of RADICAL changes in my life and was not sure which way to go. This book has been invaluable to me in connecting to the inner knowing that knows…

Oh how I love Gina Lake’s books. I have given away many copies. Because they are so special, I can’t NOT share them with others. This book is for you if you ever suspected that what you believe about your life may not be true, and you wish to experience the Joy that is already yours… Now! Gina will turn you inward, to the wisdom that is available to you, and you experience it for yourself. More than just a teaching, Gina’s books are, for this reader, a catalyst for Awakening.

Gina writes beautifully, and all of it is as familiar to the soul as your own hand. And the wonderful exercises will lead you to the experience of what she writes, not just the mental understanding of it.

Soon after reading “Radical Happiness”, my first Gina Lake book, the father of my child shot himself and left his body… due in large part to the clarity and connection I have to what “I” truly am as a result of basking in Gina Lake’s books, each moment surrounding his “death” was perfect and I was completely present and not suffering in a story about what was happening, and completely available to others… I felt LOVE, not sadness, and Joy, not resistance. This expansiveness has continued as I give my self the gift of her words on a regular basis; so I can continue to remember myself. Now Mind is my partner, not my Master.

I would love that you give this book to you. If you love what Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie or Advaita point to, or you are just tired of “suffering”, you will love this work. Run, don’t walk, to the Checkout Button!
